This large cabinet specimen from Cambokeels mine in Weardale is remarkable in more ways than one. It comprises a tall, dome-like mass of Calcite, with a small area of Quartz epimorphing a Fluorite cube, virtually the whole of which is encrusted in pale cream coloured, large, delicate, free-standing and interlocked, pseudohexagonal platy 'poker chip' Calcite crystals. This habit of Calcite is well-known from Cambokeels mine, but rarely in such large, and thin crystals. Individually these crystals exceptionally reach 4.1 cm across, but most are between 2 and 3 cm in diameter. Amazingly, because of the weight of the specimen, the vast majority of these crystals are immaculate, with no sign of damage. This is because the specimen has a naturally flat base to sit it in the vertical position, but for storage it can be placed on one side where some of the crystals have been removed. Quite how this specimen was carried out from the mine perfectly intact and then cared for for several decades is quite staggering. I cannot imagine that another of this quality exists from this mine, it is simply stunning. Due to its size, fragile nature and uniqueness, please inquire if you are interested in purchasing, as we will have to arrange careful couriering at an additional cost. Ex Peter Blezzard collection.
