Topaz with Quartz
Just a mention of the Schneckenstein cliff at Schneckenstein in Saxony, Germany starts the collector picturing classic, pale yellow tinted Topaz from this historic locality. The site has been known to produce Topaz for around 250 years and for much of this period was the main source for the gemstone throughout Europe. Collecting in the area is now prohibited. With maximum dimensions of 5.5 cm, this miniature displays several well developed delicate, wine yellow crystals on a characteristic greisen matrix. Greisens form by the passage of hot gases or superheated vapour flowing within solidifying granite bodies. This deposit in Germany was worked by the Königskrone Topaz mine, so the specimen could be from here or a surface outcrop.
