Tucson, Arizona, USAManganite from Ilfeld in Harz, Thuringia, Germany is simply the world's best. The crystals from there are large, glossy, and extremely well-defined and represent the 'best of species' by a large margin. Most of the best specimens were collected during the latter part of the 19th century although some good specimens have been recovered in more recent years. This small cabinet specimen is a really fine display quality example, with thick prismatic shiny black Manganite crystals reaching 3 cm in length, all perfectly terminated and with no visible damage to the flat pinacoid terminations. The Manganite crystals are intergrown, with many rising upwards as freestanding crystals. Microcrystalline white Calcite occurs around the base of the specimens and over some of the smaller, lower Manganite crystals, providing a nice contrast in colours. A top class Manganite from the Type Locality and world's most famous occurrence.
