Vivid, deep sky to duck egg blue, botryoidal Hemimorphite from Roughton Gill mine is not just a Caldbeck Fells classic, it is one of the most iconic of all British minerals. The terms ‘classic’ and ‘iconic’ are all too readily banded about, but in this case it's true! This almost 9 cm long, small cabinet specimen is a superb example and not unlike that shown on page 42 of The Lindsay Greenbank Collection: Classic Minerals of Northern England, published by the Mineralogical Record in Jan-Feb 2010, as a supplement to Vol. 41, No. 1. Covering a characteristic matrix of milky Quartz vein-stuff mixed with ferruginous gossan-Quartz, the Hemimorphite forms druses of tiny crystals covering the botryoidal surface. This surface appears smooth and slippery, but is rough, more like sandpaper (glasspaper) to the touch. This excellent Roughton Gill Hemimorphite is accompanied by two nicely printed labels, yet neither bears any collection providence. For anyone assembling a top-quality Caldbeck Fells collection, this would fit in perfectly.
