NATIVE Gold
Torquay on the south coast of Devon has always been a highly popular holiday destination and is known as The English Riviera. I holidayed here with my parents in the late 1960s and although already mad keen on geology and mineralogy, little did I know I was but a 15 minute walk from England's premier Native Gold locality. In those long gone days the site was not off-limit as it is today and I could happily have collected each and everyday. Oh for a time machine! I think most collectors are familiar with Hope's Nose Gold, occurring in wonderfully aesthetic dendritic and arborescent fronds, draped over pale pink and cream etched Calcite. The Gold occurs 'frozen' within the calcite veins and so judicious acid etching is essential to expose the Gold. This miniature is a stunning example and rather unusual in that the Native Gold fronds form an exquisite 1.5 x 1 cm ball or knot of the precious metal at one end of the Calcite matrix. Individual Native Gold 'fern leaves' attain 1 cm in length. A superb and show stopping Native Gold from Hope's Nose in Wellswood, Torquay, Devon.
