Aragonite
This elegant and rather impressive Aragonite is from the Frizington mining district of west Cumbria, England, within what was known as the West Cumberland Iron Field. The mines around here produced spectacular Aragonites and this 8.7 cm tall specimen is a superb example. Mounted vertically on a square acrylic base, colourless transparent to milky translucent crystals form a tight parallel cluster with several rising above the rest and terminating in spire-like points. The Aragonite along one side is speckled charcoal black, probably with oxidised manganese which is found in these mines. A lovely small cabinet specimen with a deaccessioned, typed and printed ex. Mineralogy & Petrography – University of Vienna label (A 2550); (Mineralog. Petrograph, Institut d. Universitat Wien).
