Farnberry mine, on Alston Moor, in Cumbria is known for one thing - Smithsonite. The locality is famed for having produced the finest, thick, botryoidal crusts of yellow Smithsonite from what was a heavily oxidized zinc-bearing vein system. The best specimens were obtained when the mine was working during the 19th century and although extensive dumps remain, anyone who has ever been lucky enough to obtain permission to collect there, will know that Smithsonite is virtually absent, apart from the less attractive 'dry-bone' variety. This large miniature to small cabinet specimen is a really fine example of the thickness the botryoidal Smithsonite obtains, and, rather than just being a cut slice - as many specimens were - is has character. The colour is really intense, and the botryoidal texture can be seen, along with a rare example of matrix. Finally, the icing on the cake is that this specimen was formerly owned by Sir Arthur Russell, the most famous of British mineral collectors, and is accompanied by his small handwritten label recording simply that it is from "Alston".
