Galena on Fluorite
Blackdene mine near the head of Weardale is renowned for having produced some of the best crystals of Galena seen in England, but more so for their striking combination with purple Fluorite. This large cabinet-sized plate is a museum quality example of this combination. Featuring a matrix of large (up to 3 cm on edge) slightly glassy pale purple cubes of Fluorite with a pale green massive Fluorite core, this bed of Fluorite has sat upon it at least 7 large Galena crystals and crystal aggregates. The Galena crystals display a complex cubo-octahedral and cubic form with an excellent bright metallic lustre and blue-grey colour absolutely typical of Blackdene mine. The largest cubo-octahedral Galena crystal is over 4.5 cm across with several others to 4 cm, all in perfect condition. Additionally, 1 to 2 mm wide Chalcopyrite crystals are sparsely scattered upon the surface of the Fluorite adding to its character. This really is a classic Blackdene mine specimen of the highest quality and in top shape. Ex George Farr collection.
