KLEINITE
The rare mercury mineral Kleinite forms in hydrothermal deposits and this rich specimen is from the McDermitt mine in the Opalite Mining District of Humboldt County, Nevada, USA. It is named for Johann Friedrich Carl Klein (1842-1907) who was a professor and curator of mineralogy in Berlin. The Kleinite on this miniature forms canary yellow , semi-crystalline encrustations over a porous, creamy white matrix of what is probably mixed Calcite and Gypsum. Kleinite has a relatively complex composition, containing mercury, nitrogen, chlorine, sulphate with a hydroxyl ion and is classified as a halide. It's a fine example of this rare mercury species.
