Cobaltoan Calcite with Malachite
Mashamba West mine in the Kolwezi mining district, Lualaba, DR Congo has produced some of the world's finest pink Cobaltoan Calcite crystals from the 1980s onwards, but never in large amounts and consequently specimens are much sought after. There is little else in the mineralogical world that produces this dramatic colour and even if you don't like pink you must surely appreciate how unusual it is. This small cabinet specimen features two pale 'bubblegum' pink scalenohedral Cobaltoan Calcite crystals, over 2.5 cm in length, sat upon a bed of small rhombic Dolomite crystals with minor dark green Malachite in association. The Calcite crystals have a glossy lustre and a fine bright translucency to them typical of the very best of these pink crystals from Mashamba West mine. Overall, the crystals are nicely formed, and display wispy, feathery extensions to the termination faces. A very colourful Calcite indeed.
