This whopper of a Spinel crystal is from Amity, near the town of Warwick, Orange County, New York, USA. Giant Spinel crystals have been known from Amity since the early 19th century with some crystals reportedly up to 158 kg in weight! This opaque, black, pyramidal crystal is over 5 cm wide and has well-defined edges. It is not a floater, and so is missing the rear half where it was originally attached to matrix, but nevertheless it is a very impressive crystal. Furthermore, it is rare to see crystals of this size for sale. A true American classic.
