Natural bismuth is generally more of a metallic blob and many collectors were introduced to bismuth in its rainbow-colored synthetic form in museum gift shops and small rock shops. Finding crystals of natural bismuth, such as this one, are far more unusual and rare. This cluster is comprised of several intergrown bismuth crystals with some lustrous faces visible as you examine the piece in hand. A very nice example of a metal that doesn't often form nice crystals! This is an old specimen, from the 1990s.
