Coming from Copper Country in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a fine and rare style of copper thumbnail specimen with two elongated copper wires sticking straight up out of a milky white quartz matrix. The copper is bright and lustrous with a great patina. Michigan coppers are among the most recognizable USA minerals with a long history of mining dating back to the mid-1800s. Elongated crystals, often simply called wires although technically they are crystals to be accurate, are very rare. This particular mine was famous for them, with specimens dated from the late 1800s and early 1900s in major museums.
