This is a lustrous, somewhat skeletal dark purple-gray Spinel octahedron from the unusual Burmese locality of Bawmar, a departure from the better known locality of Pein-pyit. All of the surfaces of this Spinel crystal are super lustrous, even the poorly formed or skeletal areas that are irregular. The overall form is distinctly octahedral and the edges and faces are well formed, although uneven. The skeletal or almost pitted looking areas on the crystal are probably a result of the crystal originally growing in a matrix of Calcite that may have interfered with the development of the faces of the Spinel crystal as incorporated Calcite during its growth that was subsequently removed during the weathering process that dissolved out the Calcite inclusions leaving the skeletal looking Spinel crystal. 15.57 grams. Really interesting!
