Aquamarine is common enough as single crystals, of course, but when you see a geometric and perfect aquamarine that looks like it has eaten a crystal of another species, that is another story! This 6cm tall crystal of aquamarine from Pakistan has two classic associations, schorl tourmaline and albite, but the special feature here is that the aquamarine somehow grew around an enclosed jet-black schorl crystal, which is now penetrating over 2cm into the blue beryl crystal. The intense color contrast really shows through! Aside from the schorl within, it seems the inclusion induced subtle effects as the crystal grew around it, such that the termination , which seems flat at first glance, is actually strange and complex in subtle details. The termination is divided nearly in half with a straight line down the middle; one half is smooth and glassy with white albite, while the other shows some more unusual complexity with small scallop-shaped surface features. It is complete both on top, and all around. There are several internal veils within the crystal, and when light hits them at the right angle, iridescent rainbows flash brilliantly as a bonus. This is NOT just an average single aquamarine, but special for all these reasons. Complete 360 degrees around, as well.
