While many of these exciting ‘kelly blue’ smithsonite and aurichalcite specimens from the 2021 find at Yanga Koubenza are typically smithsonite coating aurichalcite, this specimen is particularly interesting as it appears that the smithsonite did not grow enough to fully cover the aurichalcite beneath it, leaving some botryoids poking through or surrounded by smithsonite. As a result, this provides a wonderful contrast in form and luster, with matte, pastel blue aurichalcite ‘breaking up’ the lustrous, deeper blue smithsonite growth. A fascinating specimen from this new find, acquired as part of a small high-graded lot. Unique specimen!
