Fluorite on Hubnerite and Quartz

Complex and attractively geometric, this cabinet-sized combination piece is from the Yaogangxian Mine, the most significant for many species of China's great localities. The cluster of gemmy, light blue Fluorites sits atop a jackstraw scaffolding of lustrous, black Hubnerites that consistently reach about 2.8 cm and they are the highlight of the piece as Hubnerite is quite rare from Yaogangxian compared to its more common cousin, Ferberite. Initially, these came out in the 1990s labeled Wolframite but were later shown to be Hubnerite. They have generally a higher luster and smaller crystal size, than Ferberite from the location. The largest Fluorite is 2.8 cm, seafoam-blue-green in color; and, of course, they all have the lovely, blue-purple fluorescence that you would want. However, the Fluorite is really just an accent to the magnificent hubnerite crystals, and is not a world class Fluorite by any means (also, it has a few dinged corners). Quartz underlays the Hubnerite, with crystals up to 3.6 cm pointing down in the opposite direction. To add even more interest, the bright, shiny Hubnerites are decorated with hundreds upon hundreds of what appear to be tan, 2 mm-size Muscovite crystals. This classic, 360-degree, imposing piece is interesting and appealing from any direction you care to look at it, and well-represents the mine and the species. Hubnerite is rare from China in any large specimens.
