Intergrown scalenohedral crystals of Calcite measuring to 6 cm from the New Glencrieff mine at Wanlockhead, Scotland. The county name is now Dumfries & Galloway, but at the time these specimens were collected, Wanlockhead was in the county of Dumfriesshire. For collectors unfamiliar with this area, Leadhills is in the county of Lanarkshire because the county boundary passes between the villages of Leadhills and Wanlockhead, despite the orebody being one single deposit. It's all designed to confuse the unwary collector! In this small cabinet specimen, the Calcite crystals are white with dark metallic yellow micro-crystals of Chalcopyrite (likely with Pyrite-Marcasite) included in a subsequent layer of colourless Calcite. The crystals sit on a crystallized Quartz matrix with minor light biscuit coloured Ankerite. A really characteristic Calcite from this most classic of locations. It is accompanied with a Grove House Gallery (Keswick) small card label, a shop most British collectors spent many a happy hour in during the 1980s.
