Several translucent clove brown bladed Ferro-Axinite crystals, with sharp terminations, interlink to form a fine display. The crystals are very lustrous, measuring up to 2.9cm in width. The matrix is covered by a druse of tiny bladed Calcite crystals contrasting well with the Ferro-Axinite crystals. The reverse of the matrix is adorned with a gemmy slightly smoky 1.4cm cluster of Quartz crystals. Minor nibbles along some crystal edges as you would expect from such a sharply bladed brittle mineral, but the translucency, lustre and aesthetic display make this a fine specimen.

Puiva Mount is one of the great modern localities for axinite-(Fe), the iron-dominant member long sold under the older collector’s name “ferroaxinite.” The best Puiva crystals have the combination that makes axinite irresistible in a cabinet: wedge-like, razor-edged blades; glassy luster; deep clove-brown to smoky violet-brown color; and enough transparency that a backlit crystal can flash amber, burgundy, and tea-brown through the same face.
