Tucson, Arizona, USAOh, what a little beauty, but then I am biased with a great soft spot for Cassiterite! This splendidly-rich specimen is from Ehrenfriedersdorf in Saxony, Germany; most likely from the Sauberg mine, but this has not been noted on the label. A rich bed of at least ten intergrown Cassiterite crystals cover and are partly embedded in a typical hydrothermal veinstone matrix of mixed granular Cassiterite, Quartz and pale green Fluorite. The largest Cassiterite crystal is approximately 1.5 cm in all dimensions, and these are just the faces visible above the matrix. Although not perfect, the crystals are well developed, displaying well both their prisms and terminations. The Cassiterite is metallic black with hints of clove-brown around some edges and all have a brilliant reflective metallic lustre. This showy Saxony Cassiterite is from the Dr Josef Clemente Collection of southern Germany.
