Proustite
The area around Niederschlema in the Schlema Valley became famous over the centuries for its iron, copper, silver and uranium mines. This magnificent Proustite specimen is from one of the area's silver mines and is a complete group of solid, ex-matrix, ruby-red crystals measuring 3.0 x 1.9 x 1.6 cm. In reflected light the specimen appears dark red with blackened (due to shadows, not oxidation) faces and a silver metallic lustre. Once back-lit, the Proustite grades from an opaquer base to translucent deep cherry and ruby-red crystals. These have rounded terminations and it must be noted that one of the three terminations has been slightly bruised, but only slightly. The prism faces display chevroned growth patterns and towards the crystal tips, more gemmy zones develop. A fabulous Proustite form Niederschlema in Saxony, Germany.
