NATIVE Copper
This old and somewhat weather-beaten large miniature of Native Copper is from Lake Superior, Keweenaw County, Michigan, USA. This is clearly a very old and historic specimen proven by the two accompanying labels and its attached number '68'. The locality obviously indicates the specimen was recovered from within Lake Superior, which surrounds this most northerly county of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Native Copper nuggets and specimens are known to exist on the lakebed and if close to the shoreline can simply be picked out of the water. A series of crude Native Copper crystals form a rather distorted cruciform large miniature with two adjacent branches pointing in parallel. The Native Copper has an outer skin of reddish chocolate brown to 0.5 mm thick and where this is missing reveals an almost black Native Copper core. The surface texture and various patinas are probably a result of exposure to fresh water for untold centuries. A fascinating Native Copper from Upper Michigan and one which carries much history.
