Cuprite
Without doubt this specimen has to be described as a showstopper! I have looked at many Cuprites over the years, but this leapt out making me shake my head in disbelief at its size and beauty! Two exceptionally large dark maroon octahedral Cuprite crystals to 3.3 cm on edge, display perfectly on a white-ish-green fine-grained matrix. This specimen is from the famous Mashamba West mine at Kolwezi, Katanga, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Although outdated, this location commonly appears on older labels as Shaba, Zaire. This specimen also displays smaller Cuprite crystals to 2 cm. The crystal faces have a bright, sub-metallic lustre with naturally etched areas, typically more in the centre of each octahedral face. This is a fabulous and magnificent example of Cuprite from this well-known copper locality.
