Calcite from the West Cumbrian iron mining district is known the world over from specimens collected during mining operations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Bigrigg is one of the most famous villages in the area, simply because it was the name used on many of the labels, as is the case here. This large display specimen is clearly very old but is a very good example of one of the forms of Calcite from this region. If you look carefully it does show signs of wear, but many of the Calcite crystals (which reach 1 cm in length) are very well formed and gemmy. It is hosted by a porous limonitic ironstone. A small handwritten label accompanying the specimen records "Birkett 31.3.91 / Bigrigg 1890 / 2/-.". This indicates that the specimen was found at Bigrigg in 1890 and was sold by one of the Keswick-based dealer brothers John and Robinson Birkett in 1891. A lovely, old-time Cumbrian Calcite with unusually fine provenance.
