Blackdene mine, close to the village of Ireshopeburn in County Durham, is one of Weardale's most famous mines because of its world-class purple Fluorite specimens. The mine is known to have been worked during the 1400s and only stopped operating in 1987. This delightful small cabinet specimen consists of a matrix plate completely covered with lustrous and glassy, sharp cubic lilac-purple Fluorite crystals up to 2.5 cm on edge, but more typically averaging about 1 cm. Occasional milky-white Calcite crystals accompany the Fluorite. The Fluorite shows good daylight fluorescence; is bright blue-white with pale pink Calcite in LWUV and dull blue-white in SWUV. A great Fluorite from Blackdene mine.
