Cuprite on Primary Malachite
A fabulous octahedral Cuprite crystal, 1.4 cm wide, rests at an acute angle, part embedded in a small matrix of Primary Malachite, from the Mashamba West mine in the Kolwezi mining district of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Cuprite forms a metallic black crystal with mirror-like reflective faces and only along one edge are hints of its true characteristic blood-red colour be detected. The Primary Malachite has a silky lustre which shimmers whilst rocked back and forth. It forms broad, gently curved blades nested within each other, with each layer receding a little, in a Sidney Opera House roof-style structure. A choice combination piece from this classic mine in west Africa.
