Tucson, Arizona, USAThe botryoidal variety of Hematite known as Kidney Ore was found throughout Florence mine, just east of the west Cumbrian town of Egremont. Iron mineralisation occurs here through the replacement of limestone and without doubt, the Kidney Ore from Florence is amongst the absolute best in the world. This is a great specimen, pleasing in terms of size, colour, morphology and patina. Covering a core of massive cryptocrystalline Hematite, a 1 cm thick outer growth of radial, fibrous Hematite crystals form the botryoid surface. The fibrous Hematite is graphite to steel-grey with a silky lustre while the outer botryoidal surface is slightly reddish milk chocolate-brown with a metallic-satin lustre. The Hematite forms a 'V' shaped tower over its flattened base, with individual botryoidal spherules to about 2 cm diameter. These merge to form linked Hematite ribs. This excellent specimen will look fabulous in a display.
