Gold with quartz crystal and tree root fragment, 16 cm, from the Red Ledge mine, Washington District, Nevada County, California. This is certainly one of the most famous gold specimens from California. It formed deep underground and, after erosion brought it near the surface, a pine tree root invaded the vein and became embedded in the gold and the attached gold-included quartz crystal. The Tracy family of miners discovered it in 1959 and nicknamed it “The Corsage.” It was shown at the annual fair in Angels Camp, California, and was taken to school by their daughter Lyla for “show and tell.” It became part of the Charles Crespi collection, which Kristalle acquired in the 1980s.
