Malachite on Calcite
The original label accompanying this most attractive specimen is recorded as olivenite on smithsonite but is actually Malachite on Calcite. Close, but no cigar! Malachite is most commonly found at Tsumeb as pseudomorphs after Azurite but on this lovely miniature, form primary Malachite crystals in spherical globular clusters composed of multiple arrays of Malachite blades. Many of these are scattered over a slightly yellow tinged cream Calcite surface of sub-millimetre rhombic crystals. The Malachite is deep emerald green and lustrous and stands out against the contrasting yet equally glittering Calcite crystals.
