Tucson, Arizona, USAThis very attractive specimen of Calcite comes from the Bigrigg mine, in west Cumbria and was almost certainly collected underground in the mine during the late 19th century. For what is ordinarily such a common mineral species, this habit of Calcite with its association with Hematite and Goethite iron ores is so distinctly west Cumbrian. Gemmy colourless to pinkish tinted crystals of pyramidal 'dogtooth' Calcite crystals measuring to 1.3 cm in length, richly adorn the hedgehog-like specimen. This dome-like radiating aggregate is formed upon a hollow light brown Goethite matrix and in amazing condition for its age. Individually, many of Calcite crystal are transparent and shine like gems. A fine old-time West Cumbrian Calcite specimen.
