Smithsonite
Light to battleship grey botryoidal Smithsonite form a drusy pervasive coating over an approximately 14 x 8 cm display face covering a complex granular matrix of tan coloured rock and black sulphide minerals. This specimen is from the line-of-lode mines in the central Broken Hill Mining District in New South Wales, Australia and is ex. the Milton Lavers Collection. Milton Lavers lived at Broken Hill and over his lifetime assembled perhaps the most extensive and important Broken Hill Collection in private hands. The Smithsonite forms spherical clusters averaging around 5 mm diameter of micro-crystals which produce a somewhat silky lustre. A very rich example of characteristic Broken Hill Smithsonite.
