This exceptionally fine Calcite specimen is an old-timer from Pallaflat mine, Bigrigg, Cumbria and has miraculously survived intact for over a century. Reaching smaller cabinet in size the classic dome-like form of matrix is encrusted with gemmy, clear, 'dog tooth' habit Calcite crystals measuring to 1.7 cm in length. Usually one or two of the Calcite crystals show some sign of abrasion or wear, but this piece is remarkably fine. An old handwritten label accompanying the specimen looks to date to the early part of the 20th century.
