Calcite
A one-of-a-kind specimen of thick, circular, scone-like crystals of light apricot Calcite measuring to 4.8 cm diameter sitting on a sparkling drusy layer of Dolomite. This covers a mixed sulphide matrix of mainly Sphalerite and Arsenopyrite. From the Herja mine in Maramureș County, Romania, the Calcite forms uniaxial growths of highly flattened rhombohedral crystals. Our brilliant photographer, Olga Kaspera, suggested the prime crystal looks like a lightly baked scone and I have to agree! We were tempted to spread it with jam and Cornish clotted cream, but then thought better of it! There are 488 photographs of Calcite from Herja on mindat, out of which there is only one of the same habit and that is white; nowhere as attractive as this lovely apricot hue.\n
