Smithsonite
For anyone who has had the great pleasure of visiting Greece or, better still, collecting there, Sounion with conjurer images of the ancient Temple of Poseidon, high on Cape Sounion and set against an azure-blue Aegean Sea! But in addition to spectacular sights, the Sounion mines have produced equally spectacular minerals and this wonderful greenish-turquoise Smithsonite is right up there amongst them. This vividly coloured Smithsonite forms a bubbly, botryoidal mounds with a fabulous silky lustre and is a top-quality small cabinet specimen for this classic mining district. Specific mine localities are almost impossible to assign as the number of mines, both big and small, are prolific and riddle the countryside with diggings, adits and shafts. A wonderful specimen!
