The Capillitas mine and mining district in Catamarca, Argentina are best-known for their magnificent stalactites of vivid pink Rhodochrosite, most of which are sliced to reveal their stunning internal banding. That material became so popular that the old mines were reworked for specimens, but why were the mines started in the first place? Well, it was for silver and gold, probably from the 17th century onwards, but specimens of the rich ores were rarely preserved. This rare, and very rich example of the gold ore presents thin leaves of buttery yellow-gold coloured metallic Native Gold, richly scattered over an irregular shaped small cabinet-sized plate of light tan to iron-stained Quartz. Specifically from Nueva Esperanza vein in the Capillitas Mining District, this is a great rarity. The flakes of Native Gold are up to 5 mm across and are all partly embedded in the matrix.
