A beautiful small miniature cluster of ex-matrix Galena crystals from Blackdene mine by the village of Ireshopeburn in Weardale, County Durham, England. Although perhaps better known as a famous Fluorite-producing mine, Blackdene began as a lead mine with exploitation of the major veins beginning in the 15th century. The Galena forms a dominant, complex cube measuring 2.2 x 2.2 x 1.8 cm, modified between the cube and octahedron. This displays an asymmetric habit with other, smaller such crystals branching out in various directions. The lead grey crystals have a fascinating waxy metallic lustre with smooth undulating faces and sometimes a patina of burnished pale gold. This is a beautiful and delightfully crystallised Galena from Blackdene mine which, dare I suggest, from certain angles looks like a small duck!
