Mimetite from many locales in Mexico are common on the market, but not from the old Bilbao Mine. This colorful miniature is composed of mounded, vibrant orange botryoidal aggregates of Mimetite to 2.5 cm across with some white highlights for contrast. This shocking orange piece displays well from both sides! It is composed entirely of Mimetite and is quite hefty! Although so scarce that most people do not know they existed briefly in the 1960s or 70s, I have always appreciated the aesthetics, color and unusual form of these Bilbao Mine Mimetites as they are quite different from other Mexican mimetites. This is an old specimen from the Dennis Mullane Collection, we got nearly a decade ago and only recently trimmed and cleaned up.
