The calcite "jewels" that came out from the Cumberland mines stunned the world in the mid-1800s and they still stun us today! This is a particularly superb miniature with incredible natural luster, from the old finds here (over 150 years old!). A competition-quality miniature, this stout, glassy and gemmy, limpid 'butterfly twin' of colorless calcite represents the best that Egremont has produced. It is a superb miniature that would be hard to beat, complete all around 360 degrees. Ex. Dr. Francesco Bedogne collection along with his label. Much older labels are also present from a collector in Rome and two that look as if they date to the late 1800s. Literally, this is as close to a "jewel" as calcite can get, and when you add to it the historical importance of this find and the style, you get a competitive miniature.
