Spodumene var. Triphane on Quartz (Illustrated!)
Triphane is a green-yellow variety of spodumene while the more common kunzite is the pink variety. Surprisingly, kunzite in quality specimens is actually more common from the rich mines of Afghanistan, than is a yellow-green triphane crystal. Particularly on matrix, such specimens are excruciatingly rare! This matrix specimen features a dramatically displayed and sharp GEM crystal, 5.5 cm tall, surmounting a balanced quartz matrix. It has one of the sharpest terminations you will see on a kunzite, and is almost totally transparent. This fine piece was long in the collection of our coworker and friend, Wally Mann of Dallas, Texas. If you think about how many GOOD matrix spodumenes you have seen of any color, let alone of this color....it is not many. Illustrated in MR vol 51, page 192.
