Cobaltian Calcite on Calcite twin, with Malachite
A stunning geometrical specimen, regardless of species! What we think happened here was that first a normal (and probably colorless) calcite crystal formed, showing typical sharp twinning about the symmetric midsection. Later, the original calcite was either replaced or both replaced and coated by a layer of cobaltian rich calcite. Is it completely replaced inside? Impossible to tell without cutting open, but other similar examples we have seen that were broken, often showed a range of replacement within. Regardless, the outer layer is certainly a later generation of pebbly growth of Co-calcite. The slight cobalt gives the pink coloration. The combination of color and geometry, with little accents of green malachite sheaves, is shocking to the eye and creates a very memorable specimen. One of the most famous pieces in the Pohl collection is a large version of this same material, and it seems like she acquired them in the 1970s by its relatively low number in the collection (49184 out of over 100,000 pieces).
