Vesuvianite (Manganoan)
The single finest examples of vesuvianite in the world, to me, are indisputably the rich intense purple crystals or the elongated green crystals from a few small old finds at the Jeffrey asbestos quarry in Quebec, Canada. The best of them have this shocking, neon, fake-looking color that is even more saturated and intense in-person than in the photos. This piece is a large thumbnail featuring a crystal on the edge that prominently displays, and is 1.3 cm tall. Photos say it all. The color, the luster... both top percentile possible. Interestingly, the color in these is due to manganese - which normally turns them red from other locations such as in the Kalahari. The purple, especially at this intensity, is even more rare than the green variety from this famous location, now closed. Dr. Erika Pohl-Ströher - 49873
