Bright canary-yellow Cadmian Smithsonite drapes over a white Calcite matrix and a well-defined scalenohedral Calcite on this alluring piece from Weinan, China. The Cadmian Smithsonite is a beautifully distinct yellow layer, but there is a diffuse yellow area underneath this layer where it may be replacing the underlying Calcite and we believe this is a partial pseudomorph. A few small, white, saddle-shaped crystals of Dolomite are present in vuggy areas. We just love the contrasting canary-yellow and whitish contrasting colors. Atypical compared to earlier finds of Smithsonite at this locality that had the classic botryoidal texture but were a less vivid or sparkly yellow to them, and so this seems a unique new find (late 2019, on a trip to rural China).
