Significant and quite substantial for Lavrion Fluorite specimens, this cabinet-sized cluster of Fluorites was collected in 2020 from the Sounion mines. GEMMY, with a light, mint-green color, there are perhaps two dozen Fluorite crystals sitting atop a plate of unusual sandstone matrix. Silky luster gives the crystals 'body', and the largest Fluorite is 2.4 cm on edge, an almost unheard of size for a Lavrion fluorite in any kind of good quality for translucency and sharpness. There is minor damage only; it is largely intact and very 3-dimensional. There are also numerous tiny Calcites, some doubly-terminated, decorating many of the faces. Some Lavrion Fluorites can have purple zoning, and these exhibit hints of that here and there. But what makes these crystals unique are the sharp and distinct reddish phantoms. Likely from an iron oxide, those highlights within take the importance of this piece to a new level in terms of interest and aesthetics. The Fluorite has a classic, deep purple-blue fluorescence.
