Stibnite on Calcite
Stibnite from the historic Herja mine (it actually dates back to Roman times), as well as other localities in Maramures County, often have a very distinct and alluring habit that is well-known to collectors worldwide. They usually form as clusters, and a matrix specimen is really uncommon! Gunmetal-grey, lustrous, and striated, these stout blades range up to about 2.3 cm in length, and they are arranged in attractive and varied sprays across the well-balanced matrix. The well-formed terminations are quite recognizable, and one of the inviting characteristics of Herja Stibnites. The white matrix is primarily a sugary Calcite that has a very soft, salmon-colored fluorescence. Considering that this is Herja, there may very well be some amount of Quartz and Dolomite mixed in. This small cabinet piece is a classic and showy specimen from one of the more significant European localities for Stibnite. An old classic, likely from the 1970s-1980s.
