First discovered and named at the Berezov District, this lead chromate species is one of the most colorful of all metallic species, and an ore of tin. This crystal is lustrous and translucent, vivid orange in color, a bit less red than its Australian cousins. Berezov crocoites are illustrated in history books on mineralogy, and some few reference specimens with small crystals turn up time to time - but this is a freak of nature with a huge size along with a spearlike form that attracts the eye and dominates the space allowed a display thumbnail in competition. Many people can have a sophisticated, fine, Australian crocoite thumbnail. They are wonderful. They are shinier and more metallic as well. But, this is more rare, special, and notable for its unique size and crystal shape ; and therefore potentially of more importance in many thumbnail collections. We have seen this material before, but never a crystal so big. Old material, surely from the 1800s, and obtained by Shields Flynn from one of the collections he bought over the years.
