The extrusive gray rhyolite of the Thomas Range in Utah is the matrix for glassy and gemmy, cognac-colored topaz crystals, here to 1.0 cm in length. Also emplaced on the matrix are lustrous, metallic, black pseudomorphs, to 7 mm across. The replacement is of hematite, after garnet. Quite rare. Jack purchased this from retired dealer Mark Rogers in the 1980s. Ex. Jack Halpern Collection.
