The astounding color of this cluster of calcites results from rich inclusions of hematite, which you can see as a coating providing a flat, opaque setting surrounding the highly lustrous crystals themselves. Fortunately, there is no coating to mar the super sheen of the faces of the calcites - the hematite is all included inside the crystals.
