This is a unique specimen, unlike any I have seen from this locality. This locality is famous for huge rhombohedra of rhodochrosite, but this piece is composed of a hundred small rhombs, in pyramid-like growths one upon the other. It is all capped by little tufts of sparkly, translucent, calcite! The rhodochrosite has a sparkle to it, as if minute sugar grains were sprinkled all over it - this is more visible in person. Because of the sparkle, the piece reflects more light than you would think and looks more pale in the photo than in person as an artifact of the camera vs. the human eye. Joe Budd photos.
