Carter County calcites are renowned for their form and color. This particular specimen is a superb example not only for the fact that it has the classic, deep red- orange color and good translucence, but the fact that the majority of the elongated crystals are intact (there are a few broken off, as is common). Carter County is in extreme southeastern Montana in the Paleozoic Williston Basin, an area not known for fine mineral specimens. These are about all that come from there, but they have a unique appearance recognizable anywhere, and unique in the world. Old classics, this is a very aesthetic example in the size class. Note - these were previously thought to be aragonites and are stated to be such on the Robertson label included with this piece, but more recent testing has confirmed them to be calcite.
