Fontainebleau, France is a noted locality for amazingly sculptural specimens of Calcite that is included by white sand. In this case, we have a cluster composed of sharp, well-defined Calcite rhombs, up to 2.6 cm on edge, that almost resembles an 'artichoke' or 'pineapple.' The Calcites are intergrown and overlap, creating a distinctive and highly aesthetic en-echelon look. These are considered French classics, and this floater ranks highly even among those I have seen in the best old collections. It is even better in person, where two eyes can really help you appreciate the three-dimensionality of this specimen. Obtained from Scott Williams, her favorite dealer, probably in the 1950's judging by Kay's catalog number. The p[piece is remarkably pristine and display-worthy despite that it is probably 100 years of age from the ground.
